Starred Review. This encyclopedic collection of gardening advice is, in the Rodale tradition, purely organic, albeit with a no-nonsense, 21st-century attitude. Extensive attention is given to tantalizing techniques such as cover cropping and dealing with deer damage (including what to protect, repellants and scare devices, and 10 kinds of antideer fences). The vegetable entries are equally comprehensive, with sections detailing “Crop Basics,” “Secrets of Success,” “Preventing Problems,” “Regional Notes” and “Troubleshooting Problems.” Drawings of pest-infested plants are helpful, and Bradley covers the gamut of solutions, from timed planting to crop rotation, barriers to repellants, wisely advising prevention as the first tactic and using (organic) insecticides as a last resort. The book is extensively illustrated with attractive drawings, although the choice of what to depict is sometimes mysterious; the image of flowering arugula is lovely, for example, although readers may wish they could see a picture of, say a disease called “aster yellows.” the “new growth… pale and bushy, forming a witch’s broom.” For any gardener who needs to keep track of “crucial care” for squash, how to control cucumber beetles with a vacuum cleaner or any of the myriad details that arise every day in the garden, this book is a must. To speed up the recovery, till the soil frequently to allow the sun to cook it. Small gardens and raised beds can be solarized. Soak them down deeply with water, cover with clear plastic and cook them for a month in the sun. If the pea test fails again, cook them another month. 3. Your book features 57 gardening dilemmas and solutions for those dilemmas. How did you determine which dilemmas to include? Were they based on personal experience or did you survey a lot of gardeners to find the most common dilemmas? Is a follow-up book in the works with more gardening dilemmas? There are issues which come up again and again, like ‘My yard is too long and narrow’. I tend to write for people who are not horticultural experts but are design-aware (like me) and I see gardens on these terms. For a while I was gardening for a book publisher whose long, narrow garden was the length of a city block. It was difficult to rationalize the space. When I saw designer Chris Moss’s London garden, which is compartmentalized in a clever way, it stuck in my mind and was the first ‘problem’ to go into the book. My garden is under siege  But not to worry. With photos and simple tips, she says, each chapter “is a garden tour…sharing the surprisingly simple ideas that can solve complex dilemmas.” And we’re off: Every garden deserves a citrus tree. In all but the coldest districts, citrus trees feature in backyards. The biggest problem with my garden is the soil or lack of it. Our soil is so sandy and no matter what I do to it, I cannot get it to become the kind of soil which is good for planting vegetables. I did get some really good cucumbers this year but that is all that has come up. Thin plants to recommended distance to reduce shading. Move garden to sunnier location. I deep mulch, but I use my own herbicide free grass. I let the yard get embarrassingly long, then mow it. I let it dry, rake it, and deep mulch the garden. You can buy or make compost, but if you buy, it must be certified compost. If you use manure, use something like chicken manure because they don’t eat hay. The Grazon can persist through digestion unfortunately. Where: In clusters, under leaves, and on new plant growth of indoor and outdoor gardens. Does a cottage garden require a cottage? Because wireless devices such as smartphones are often limited to the content provided by their carriers, the portion of the Web that is available to wireless users is frequently referred to as a walled garden. Speaking of the Web as a whole, AOL is generally considered the major – and most successful – practitioner of the walled garden approach. According to a spokesperson from Disney (arguing against the recent AOL – Time Warner merger), 85% of AOL users never leave AOL territory; according to The Economist, almost 40% of the time Americans spend on the Web is within the confines of AOL’s walled garden. Mulch is one of the unsung heroes of landscape design. It’s highly portable, malleable and, for certain types of mulch, you can even make your own! Areas shaded by large trees can be transformed overnight from eyesores to eye-openers by applying an attractive mulch. For all its value, there is much misunderstanding about the use of this landscaping solution, and I receive numerous questions about garden mulch from readers. There are as many types of landscaping mulch as there are landscape challenges. Mulch is sometimes used in conjunction with landscape fabrics. Expert know-how on solving gardening problems & more Our pest and problem pages contain information on over 200 of the most frequently encountered garden plant problems by the Plant Doctors at the William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening. I live in a neighborhood with many cats, and we do not have any cats in our home. Guess what the neighborhood cats do in my yard? What can I do to eliminate the smell left behind and what can I do to keep them away? I have tried moth balls, pine chips, and several commercial products. I love gardening but really become frustrated by the “mess” of cleaning up after animals and the odor that they leaves behind. I also had some problems with straw bale gardening. At least with manure you test a sample before you put it on the garden. Just water some bean or tomato seedlings with some compost tea made from your manure. Welcome to Harvest to Table. Thank you for stopping by! We love to share vegetable gardening tips that will take you from seed to kitchen serving. You might appreciate a post I wrote earlier this year on the herbicide problem with straw bale gardening: http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com/danger-of-straw-bale-gardening-no-one-is-mentioning/ i just got a raised pnalter .3 5 and 22in tall. I plan on growing herbs in it (maybe a vegetable, too). What kind of soil/mix of soil should i use to fill it.a cheaper version seems to be 3 cubic foot bags of garden soil by Kellogg any opinions?should I mix in compost..how much?should i add any sand?worms?anything else?I am new to this and want to do it right. Thanks for your help. I have a constant battle with weeds in my garden. We’ve never tried the deep mulch method of gardening, but we do use cover crops like winter rye and medium red clover to build up the organic matter in our soil. This year we planted the clover in between rows and hills in the garden with great results. I never would have thought of herbicides or pesticides on hay. How disappointing if that’s what it turns out to be… The garden was definitely lacking in interest. The top corner was the perfect place to create a feature that would be viewed from the house.
